Many of us rely on prepackaged food to get through our busy lifestyles. I was one of those people. I would buy lots of rice mixes, seasoning packets and cream of whatever soups. These things are easy. Do I occasionally still use them? Yup, but I have cut our consumption down a lot. Most of these items are loaded with salt, sugar and a ton of ingredients that I can’t pronounce. Plus, these things aren’t as cheap as we think.
A few years ago, I started making more things from scratch. I started to experiment with ingredients to see if I could make meals without boxes and mixes. I still have a long way to go but I’m getting there. I got the idea to start Meals Outside the Box to help me track the changes we are making and share those ideas with you.
It took us a few years to get to this point. Your meal preparation will not change overnight. Take the tips that work for you and adapt other recipes. There are still a lot of prepared things I buy: some bread, cereal (I’m pretty sure my husband would be sad if I said no more cereal), crackers, pretzels and chips, some boxed pasta, canned and frozen veggies, and canned beans. I just don’t have enough time in the day to do all my own canning, freezing and baking. I try to make the most of the time I do have in the kitchen to cut out items that really are better and healthier homemade.
I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I enjoy creating it.
Regards,
Kristin
